The Björkdal Mine is one of northern Europe's largest mines for the extraction of gold. The mine's dams and reservoirs store tailings and process water from the mine's concentrators. A number of dams will now be raised and expanded to increase the reservoir's capacity and ensure future mining. The total length of the dams is about 2.8 kilometers and they will be raised about 3.5 meters.

In addition to the expansion of the dams, supplementary work will be carried out on the so-called spillways that regulate the water level in dams K1 and K2.

"We're very proud that Peab has been entrusted to work on the mine. We have previously raised the dams of the Björkdal Mine in similar projects. This gives us a good opportunity to take advantage of previous experience together with Björkdalsgruvan AB. This is a project that requires a great deal of precision in execution," says Hans Boija, Region Manager Civil Engineering at Peab.

The project is a turnkey contract in partnering. The work started in February and will be completed in stages where dam K1 and the spillways are expected to be completed in 2026 and the dam called VSD is expected to be completed in 2027.

The project will be order registered in the first quarter 2026.
